Begun in 1181 on the site reputed to be where St David founded a monastic settlement in the 6th Century. The present building was altered during the 12th to the 14th centuries and again in the 16th. Starting in 2004 the medieaval cloisters are being recreated to provide a treasury, education centre and toilets. There is a new refectory providing fresh food from local producers, with stunning views over the cathedral, the grounds and the city of St Davids. The ceilings, oak painted wood and stone vaulting are of considerable interest.
